Safer and Easier Solution for Cataract Surgery Complication
The product is an innovative solution for treating Intraocular Lens Dislocation, a known complication among patients who have undergone cataract surgery.
-
The Need
Cataract surgery is a widely common surgery with approximately 10 million surgeries performed annually worldwide.[1] About 2% of the patients that undergo this treatment suffer from a complication of Intraocular Lens Dislocation consisting of displacement of the lens from its position in the eye, causing partial to complete blindness.
Treating Intraocular Lens Dislocation normally includes penetration to the eye and repositioning of the lens, suturing it to the sclera (the white outer layer of the eye) or to the iris. However, these procedures are considered very complicated, they can only be done by an expert and can take a few hours. -
The Company’s Solution:
This novel medical device is innovating with a new technique – a clip that secures the intraocular lens to the sclera instead of using sutures.
- Increases safety for the patient during and after the procedure.
- Shortens dramatically the procedure time.
- Easier method that can be applied by most eye doctors instead of only experts.
-
Market Potential
No similar solutions are currently in medical use.
- 8 million cataract surgeries are expected to be performed annually in the U.S. and more than 60 million worldwide by 2045. [2]
- Increase of life expectancy and the aging of the population in western countries project a higher percentage of the population suffering from cataract and Intraocular Lens Dislocation correspondingly.
